Metzgerei Burkhardt – from white sausage to sausage cake

30 Sep 2026

When you enter Burkhardt's butcher's shop in Mannheim, you immediately sense a special feeling that many associate with fine dining: warmth, attention to detail and the sort of friendly, down-to-earth atmosphere that is not so easy to find these days. This family business has been firmly established in the Waldhof district of Mannheim since 1961 – and has succeeded in combining tradition with genuine creativity, creating an enjoyable overall experience.

A family business that continues to evolve

The butcher’s business is currently run by Peter Burkhardt, who recently received his Master Craftsman’s Certificate in Gold, and his son Philipp: two men who live and breathe their craft. Both embody what customers value most about this business: reliability, quality and a passion for good meat. The sausage kitchen is characterised by a calm precision usually found only in specialist production facilities. Nevertheless, the proprietors are always open to further development. Over the past few years, the range of products has been refined continuously, with new specialities added and tried-and-tested classics perfected with even greater dedication. Many products are made according to family recipes that have been passed down through generations and carefully adapted over the years.

This approach has paid dividends with the company having already been awarded the title of German White Sausage Champion on several occasions. Indeed, their white sausage was even crowned European Champion Sausage in 2023. At the international ‘Concours du Meilleur Boudin’ competition in Mortagne-au-Perche, France, the ‘Kurpfälzer Rotwurst’ was awarded the Trophée National Allemand Grill d’Or, making Burkhardt the 2026 German Champion of traditional blood sausage. Moreover, the ‘Mannheimer Taler’ was also awarded the prize for best product overall at the European Championships in Eindhoven, a high level of quality that is also endorsed by customers. Thus, readers of Falstaff magazine ranked Metzgerei Burkhardt among Germany’s most popular butcher’s shops, ranking it first in the state of Baden-Württemberg. For a business that consciously prioritises artisanal production, this is a great achievement demonstrating that quality craftsmanship speaks for itself.

Sausage cake à la Anna – an extraordinary idea

Besides the two proprietors, there is another individual who shapes the identity of the business: Philipp's wife, Anna, whose sausage cakes have long been a source of inspiration for the region's creative thinkers. What began as a spur-of-the-moment idea for a wedding has developed into a genuine trend. Instead of sponge and buttercream, the cakes are made from fine varieties of sausage and pâté, layers of bread, savoury creams, herbs and decorative elements, making each cake a miniature work of art. Unsurprisingly, these creations have won several international awards over the years and even impressed expert juries. One jury member once summed it up perfectly: “These cakes are as surprising as they are brilliantly crafted – a completely new kind of culinary pleasure."

A place for lovers of fine food

Burkhardt's is one of those shops where you sense that culinary pleasure can be quite straightforward: authentic products, artisanal quality and a family that is passionate about their work. Peter and Philipp Burkhardt combine tradition with modernity – and Anna Burkhardt adds a creative touch that has become renowned both in Mannheim and much further afield.
